blogging birthday

This past Sunday, on January 28th, marked two years since I published my first personal finance blog post on Spills Spot. You can read the recap from my first blogiversary here.

It’s been an incredible journey. There are a lot of areas in which I’ve grown, and a lot of lessons I’ve learned along the way. What started as a fun side project has continued to grow in size, passion, and importance in my life. I used to think blogging was just writing posts and hitting publish. Two years later and I’m still discovering more layers to blogging.

Content creation is still the most important part. In total, including this one, I have published 102 posts in my two years of blogging. I’m proud I have been able to maintain this level of consistency, and this is an area that offers plenty of growth potential.

This year brought more steps in the journey, including a site re-design, my first blogging income, increased page views, the creation of an email list, and a Facebook page. There are still many more plans that I’m looking to implement and hundreds more topics I want to write about.

My Blogging Vision

My vision and goals for Spills Spot have slowly evolved over time. When I first started the blog, my thought was that it would be an effective way to improve various skills and could act as a portfolio for my future career path. It began as a hobby, a place where I could share my thoughts and become a better writer.

It has become so much more than that in these two years. While it has aided in my career growth and help further my skill set, it has also had an effect on other people. Soon after starting Spills Spot two years ago, I realized that my vision was much bigger than building a portfolio. Through writing about personal finance I discovered a new passion. I wanted to share what I was learning in my money journey with as many people as possible, to help them along their own journey.

For some reason personal finance is rarely taught in schools, and this leaves many people left to fend for themselves and learn through trial by error. My number one focus is to inspire my generation to be more interested in personal finance and improve at managing their money.

Money is an intregal part of life. It can be a source of stress, conflict or discomfort. However, when managed well it can become a tool that leads to more freedom, options, and peace. My hope is to break down personal finance topics in a way that is interesting and helpful to a widespread audience.

Discovering the Personal Finance Community

One of my favorite aspects of blogging is one that I never would have expected. Blogging has led to discovering an incredible community! I have interacted with hundreds of members of the personal finance blogging community. While some may think other bloggers are in competition with one another, in the personal finance blogging community it’s the exact opposite. These bloggers encourage and build each other up, as we all push towards our goals.

This past year I joined the Rockstar Finance forums to continue to interact within this community more often, while also being extremely active on Twitter. If you’re a blogger, I highly recommend joining the forums and connecting with as many other bloggers as possible. There’s so much we can all learn from each other.

More to Come

These past two years have involved hundreds of hours of effort, but it has all been well worth it. I have grown as an individual, my ideas and perspectives continue to become further refined, and hopefully people’s lives have been positively impacted. I still love to write, and I love thinking of all the possibilities of where this blog can go in the coming years.

Anyways, thank you all for following along with me throughout this journey at Spills Spot! I promise there is plenty more to come during year three and beyond. I wouldn’t be here without you all!
